Born in Salinas, California (27 February 1902), John Steinbeck authored 27 books and won the Nobel prize for Literature in 1962 “for his realistic and imaginative writings, combining as they do sympathetic humour and keen social perception”. He also won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1940 for “The Grapes of Wrath”.
