I have recently found out about this project and decided to make it my first reading project on this blog.
The British publishing house Hogarth Press launched in October 2015 the Hogarth Shakespeare Project to commemorate 400 years since William Shakespeare’s death in 1616, the world’s greatest dramatist of all times. Eight bestselling novelists of today became part of this project by creating novels that reinterpret Shakespeare’s plays. They are:
- Jeanette Winterson with The Gap of Time (reinterpreting Winter’s Tale)
- Howard Jacobson with Shylock is my name (The Merchant of Venice)
- Anne Tyler with Vinegar Girl (The Taming of the Shrew)
- Margaret Atwood with Hag-Seed (The Tempest)
- Jo Nesbo is retelling Macbeth (coming out this year)
- Tracy Chevalier is retelling Othello (coming out this year)
- Edward St. Aubyn reinterprets King Lear (coming out in 2018)
- Gillian Flynn is retelling Hamlet (coming out in 2021)
You can find more about the project here.
